Needless to say, the potential that task manager of all things, could cause a bluescreen is pretty unacceptable! In some cases even running lm-sensors can cause a kernel panic. I've seen bluescreens from temperature-reading software just in the process of probing for the sensors. The "risk" however is that this probing has a potential to cause problems. Knowing the hardware and what integrated sensors it has, known I/O Ports can be used to read and interpret the temperature data. sensor data is retrieved first by figuring out what sensors exist by probing the hardware. No such "API" exists for retrieving the temperatures of other sensors. GPU temperaturee was added to Task manager because it was safe to do so GPU temperature features were added to WDDM 2.4, so a driver supporting that can be queried for the temperature information in a relatively risk-free manner. Not because I'm against CPU temperatures being visible, but there are side effects that are wholly undesirable.
